There is a difference between tire width and rim width. Tire width fluctuates and cannot be correctly measured without the tire being mounted onto a rim. However, if the wrong size rim is used, the measured tire width will be incorrect. In order to measure tire width correctly, a tire manufacturer’s chart would need to be consulted so the correct rims can be used. The fixed distance between the flanges, the area where the tire bead touches, is the rim width. Tire (section) width is measured in millimeters and from sidewall to sidewall with the tire mounted onto a rim, but not the vehicle.
