The Honda Civic Si 4–door, which was among the top performance subcompacts of the 1990s, has succumbed to its own success. Although it boasts high performance parts, is supposedly capable of 197-horsepower and about 170 pounds-feet of torque, the tuning of the Si does not make this a fast car in either version; the two-door or four-door. Indeed, some commentators have speculated that Honda has stuffed its Si so full of performance-oriented gear (Recaro seats and special suspension pieces) that the performance capability has been squeezed out of this vehicle. The debate on subcompact performance cars now swirls around vehicles like the Subaru WRX.
