• How a Diesel Car Engine Works

    Reaction

    A diesel car engine makes use of the fuel by creating many mini explosions. This is undertaken by compressing the diesel with the pistons and mixing it with air to ignite it, due to the increased heat of the compressed air. Waste products are produced as a result of this process, causing diesel car emissions.    

    Conversion

    A diesel car engine is similar to a gasoline powered engine in that they are both an internal combustion engine. The system uses the chemical energy that comes from diesel and converts it to mechanical energy to power the engine’s components.       

    Mechanics  

    Within the diesel car engine, there are a number of cylinders that contain pistons attached to the crankshaft. The mechanical energy that is produced as a result of the diesel being converted powers the pistons, pumping them up and down in what is known as a linear motion. This works the crankshaft, which powers the engine and makes the wheels move to propel the car forward. The steps of the cycle must be completed in order for the process to work properly. The intake stroke allows air in and is compressed by the stroke with the movement of the piston. The combustion stroke occurs when the piston reaches its pinnacle and fuel is injected into the system. The final step is the exhaust stroke, which forces out the emissions that have been created by the process.
