While the vast majority of repair shops are honest; it is a good idea to be aware of some common car repair shop scams. Cars repair shops might seem to have the advantage; they are the experts. However, doing online research and asking others what car repair shop they use is a great way of finding a quality repair shop.
Many car repair shops use false advertising to lure customers in with unbelievably low prices and then propose additional work or maintenance services, such as unnecessary fluid flushes, at substantially higher cost, sort of a bait and switch.
Find a shop with ASE Blue Seal Certified mechanics as they tend to have the necessary training to deal with complex modern cars. Get a second opinion if you are not convinced what needs to done. Some car repair shops pay their staff commission which increases the likelihood of them suggesting unneeded repairs or services to pad the bill.
Obtain a detailed written estimate listing all parts, fees and labor costs and require the shop contact you prior to performing any additional work. Ask to see any parts needing replacement before and after the repair. Make sure any replacement parts are OEM; if they aren’t be certain they are guaranteed and get any warranties in writing.
