Carbon fiber parts have become the wave of the future for people that want to create a custom space age look for their cars. Using carbon fiber instead of steel, aluminum, urethane or fiberglass adds strength to the body part in question, while normally also being quite a bit lighter. A typical carbon fiber hood is going to be about 25 pounds lighter than a stock hood. There was recently a 2002 Lotus Elise that had had everything able to be converted to carbon fiber parts. However, according to the source, there was only a total savings of 66 to 88 pounds.
