What Is the NHTSA?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is an agency reporting to the Department of Transportation. Its mission according to its website is to save lives, prevent injuries and reduce vehicle related crashes. It does this in a number of different ways but its main mission is writing and enforcing safety standards for motor vehicles. The NHTSA does extensive research, crash testing and investigation to come up with its safety ratings.

Ratings

NHTSA's website, Safercar.gov consolidates all of their safety information in one place. You can check vehicle safety recalls as well as safety reports on vehicles. The NHTSA assigns up to 5 stars in a variety of safety areas. The ratings focus on crash worthiness and rollover safety. The ratings are based on data gathered during crash and rollover tests. Five stars is the highest while one would be the lowest. You can search their database by vehicle class, year, make and model. Once you have submitted the parameters it displays the results and assigns a star rating to each category. These reports are easy to read and provide alot of useful information.

Other Sites

Safercar.gov is not the only website that provides vehicle safety ratings but it probably the most comprehensive. Autos.msn.com provides safety information using not only the NHTSA's data but also that of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
