The Honolulu International Airport (HNL) is a bustling place, and getting to the Honolulu airport car rental area can be confusing if you don’t know what to expect. This guide gives you a quick run-down of the rental agency locations servicing the Honolulu International Airport, how to get to the place where you pick up your rental and where you go to drop it off before your departure.
Car Rental Agencies and Picking up Your Rental upon Arrival
All the major rental agencies serve Honolulu travelers. Not all the rental agencies are located at the airport. Six are located at the airport, and four of them are located within a mile of the airport terminal. Though all of them are easily accessible by shuttle. Outside the baggage claim area, rental company shuttles take you to the area where you pick up your rental car. JN Car may be an exception to this, as they specialize in the rental of high-end specialty cars, and arrangements are made in advance for pick up. While on your flight to Honolulu, check the in-flight magazine for airport maps to give you a preview on the HNL airport layout and some extra context for the information listed below.
Rental agencies located at the airport: street level across from Baggage Claim G:
Directions: From your arrival gate, take the intra-airport shuttle to the baggage claim area or follow the signs to Baggage Claim and Ground Transportation if you prefer to walk. After picking up your luggage, exit the baggage claim area to the street and catch the rental car shuttle from the middle median strip just outside the baggage claim area. You won’t have to wait long as there are several shuttles on the route that pick up and drop off passengers often. It’s much easier to take the shuttle instead of walking from the baggage claim to the rental office counters, simply because there isn’t a direct route across the parking lot. Taking the shuttle is the easiest way to go.
Rental Agencies Located Near the Airport:
Directions: From your arrival gate, either walk to the baggage claim area, following the signs to Baggage Claim and Ground Transportation. Check in at the registration desk inside the baggage claim area first before taking the shuttle to the pick up area. You may be able to check in and get your paperwork and keys squared away instead of doing it at the pick up location.
Dropping off Your Rental upon Departure
It’s easy and convenient to return your rental vehicle at the drop off location at the Honolulu Airport. From either Nimitz Hwy or the H-1 Freeway, there are clearly marked signs leading you to the airport. If you rent a vehicle from an off-airport location (Alamo, Advantage, Thrifty) you will return your vehicle in the same place. It’s recommended to save the rental office location in your GPS or in your smart phone to help you with directions. If you rented a car from one of the six on airport locations, follow the signs to Rental Return to find the area where you need to drop off your car. The various companies are clearly marked when you get to the rental return area. Whether you rented from an on-airport or off-airport company, allow about 30 minutes of extra time for dropping off your rental, catch the shuttle and pass your luggage through the agricultural inspection before checking in and getting your boarding pass.
