• How to Tune Up a Car

If you want to tune up a car, you need to bear in mind a few guidelines. You can give your car a tune up if you follow the car owner’s manual and have some basic knowledge of the mechanics of cars. Cars are machines that need regular maintenance. By tuning up the car on your own, you can save a lot of money. As a general guideline, you should tune up your vehicle every year, or every 30,000 miles.

How to Tune Up a Car:

    • You must make sure that your car is cooled down before you start tuning it up, as the gas in the car is inflammable and you have to safeguard yourself from accidents.
    • The fuel filter should be replaced unless your car has a fuel injection system, in which case the injectors should be cleaned if they are clogged.
    • The spark plugs also need to be replaced along with the spark plug wires that often get worn out. If the spark plugs are platinum, they need to be replaced every 30,000 miles.
    • Since the spark plug wires are attached to the distributor cap, it might need changing when the wires are changed.
    • The condenser and points should be changed or adjusted every 6 months.
    • Unless the car has hydraulic valves, the valves should be adjusted and the valve cover gaskets changed at every tune up.
    • Remove the air filter cap and replace the air filter at every tuning.
    • Check the levels of the power steering fluid, brake fluid, coolant, oil and windshield wiper fluid and top up if required.
    • The oil filter and the oil should be replaced every 3,000 miles. Only use top quality oil filters and motor oils for your vehicle. If you check the oil and notice that it’s dark in color, you must service your car at the earliest.
    • If your car is equipped with a manual transmission, check the clutch and make adjustments if required.
    • If the drive belts appear stiff, worn or cracked, they should also be replaced.
    • Check for oil leaks under the car and on the engine and replace gaskets if necessary.
    • Also check the windshield wiper blades. If they seem stiff or cracked, replace them.
    • Take a look at the ignition timing and adjust it if required. You could also service the battery by cleaning the terminals, adding distilled water and cleaning the cable ends.
    • If the positive crankcase ventilation valve of your car is clogged, it can cause your car to stall. Hence, it should be replaced whenever you tune up your car.
    • You should ascertain that the cooling system of the car is running correctly and at the correct temperature.
    • Also ensure the wiring and insulation of the car is intact. If you observe damage, then it’s definitely worth the cost to replace it with new wiring and insulation.
    • The braking system should be in sound order, and if required, the car should be serviced, as a faulty braking system can endanger lives.

A regular tune up is important for your car’s performance and handling. It’s also essential for your family’s safety. If you know how to tune up your vehicle, you can have a lot of fun doing it. Alternatively, use the services of a qualified mechanic to get it done properly.
