Hybrid? Definition
Explained
With the ongoing changes in the world of automobiles, a true hybrid definition can be an elusive piece of terminology. This may be because there are a number of different types of hybrids, each with its own unique method of propulsion, but no matter how the vehicle is powered, the definition remains the same.
A hybrid is any vehicle that uses a traditional internal combustion engine (fueled by either gasoline or diesel) along with some type of supplemental power production.
Usually, the additional power source comes in the form of an electric motor. Depending on the type of hybrid, the motor may even be powerful enough to run the car by itself. Depending on the power needs, the vehicle will run solely on the gasoline motor, the electric motor, or a combination of both at any given moment. When running, the gasoline motor charges the battery powering the electric motor.
Other hybrids still rely on their gasoline power plants to meet their propulsion needs, but will shut the engine down when it is not needed. During these times of low demand a small electric motor will provide power for any vehicle accessories.
