• The 7 Best New Cars for Fuel Economy: Get a Higher Miles Per Gallon MPG

When it comes to the best new cars regarding their fuel economy, there are various models that will get you some great results. Buying a car with great fuel economy is the best first car to buy, since you will be saving money on gas, while getting something reliable. Here are some of the top models to look for.

    Toyota Prius

This is the most reliable car on the market when it comes to fuel economy. The Prius has an outstanding track record and can eclipse 50 miles per gallon on the highway, and almost that (48) in the city. The Prius is able to do this due to its small engine, as well as its hybrid nature of using an electric motor and gasoline.

    Honda Civic Hybrid

The Civic hybrid is also near the top of the list. It has an even weaker engine than the Prius at only 1.3 liters and 4 cylinders, but it offers better interior/exterior options. It can get 45 miles per gallon on the highway and 40 miles per gallon in the city for a combined rating of 42 miles per gallon.

    Ford Fusion Hybrid

The Ford Fusion, as well as the Mercury Milan hybrids are a little different. They have 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engines, but they are built specifically for city driving. If you do a lot more city driving than highway driving, these cars may be for you. They both get 36 miles per gallon on the highway, but 41 miles per gallon in the city.

    Honda Insight

The Insight is a non hybrid, so it makes a rare appearance. It is very small, and has a similar engine to the Civic liter and cylinder wise. It can get 43 miles per gallon on the highway and 40 miles per gallon in the city.

    Smart Fortwo

The “smart car”, as it is called, is a very small car, so naturally it gets great fuel economy. It can get 41 miles per gallon on the highway and 33 miles per gallon in the city. It comes with only 3 cylinders and 1.0 liters. The odd thing is that the car takes premium gasoline, so the fuel economy is great, but the cost of gas may not be.

    Lexus 250h

Now there is a big drop off from the cars in the 40+ miles per gallon range. Next is the Lexus 250h hybrid. It gets 34 miles per gallon on both the highway and the city. It has a weak engine for a Lexus, but will give you the luxury feel as well as the fuel economy.

    Ford Escape

SUVs typically don’t make fuel economy lists, but there are three hybrid SUVs that have been able to crack this one. Those three are the Ford Escape, the Mercury Mariner, and the Mazda Tribute. All three come with 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engines, which is less than desired for an SUV, but concessions need to be made in order to increase fuel economy. They each can get 34 miles per gallon on the highway and 31 miles per gallon in the city.
