How a Diesel SUV Compares to a Gas SUV

When it comes to a diesel SUV, they are actually lower on average in fuel economy than a regular gasoline SUV. This is surprising since gasoline gets less miles per gallon than diesel. However, diesel SUVs are not produced as much, so there has been more testing with regular gasoline SUVs, and the technology has been better perfected. Diesel fuel efficiency in new diesel cars seems to be much greater, though. There are some hybrid SUVs that are both electric and gasoline, so for this debate, we will not include hybrids. This will be pure gasoline versus pure diesel vehicles only.
Top Gasoline SUV
The top gasoline SUV in this class is the Hyundai Tucson. It comes with a 4 cylinder 2.4 liter engine. It can get 31 miles per gallon on the highway and 23 miles per gallon in the city. The next two SUVs are both Jeeps, the Compass and the Patriot. Both have a 4 cylinder 2.0 liter engine that allows it to get 29 miles per gallon on the highway and 23 miles per gallon in the city.
Top Diesel SUV
Diesel is more experienced with luxury SUVs, since diesel is more popular in Europe. The tops in this class include Volkswagen, Audi and BMW. The Volkswagen Touareg is a V6 with 3.0 liters that can get 28 miles per gallon on the highway and 19 miles per gallon in the city. The Audi Q7 can get 25 miles per gallon on the highway and 17 miles per gallon in the city. The BMW X5 xDrive can get 26 miles per gallon on the highway and 19 miles per gallon in the city.
