Comparing the Best Vans for the Disabled; Used and New Wheelchair Access Autos

Bookmark and Share

Those who require the use of a wheelchair or another assisting accessory in order to have full mobility may benefit from purchasing one of several special vans for disabled drivers or passengers. Wheelchair handicap vans are those that have specialized motors and lifts to help accommodate the entry and exit of a wheelchair into the vehicle, whether it's in a passenger or a driver seat. When selecting from amongst the different types of wheelchair access vehicles, it's a good idea to keep in mind that these cars may be converted from standard vehicles as well, as this process is oftentimes much less expensive than the alternative. Read on for a comparison of the best vans that can be modified to make them more wheelchair friendly and accessible.

Dodge Ram

The Ram is perhaps the single best van to use for wheelchair access. A full size van, the Ram has an immense interior space with a high ceiling, meaning someone who is sitting in a wheelchair can comfortably fit inside of the vehicle. It also contains two rows of passenger seats, meaning you can remove the middle row in order to fit a wheelchair lift and to provide room for the chair itself while not sacrificing all of the standard seats in the vehicle. Dodge Rams are also sturdy and dependable vehicles that will last for many years, provided they are well maintained. Best of all, they are inexpensive relative to many of the newer models of vans on the market at this point in time.

Ford E-Series

The E-Series is the top selling model of full size vans at this point on the auto market. Ford's line of full size vans features a number of different trim types that each have a variety of up to date high end amenities to help you to travel in comfort. The interior space is not quite as large as the Dodge Ram, but there are two rows of rear seats as well. So you'll be able to seat additional passengers if you remove one row for purposes of accommodating the lift. One downside to the Ford E-Series is that many of these vehicles tend to be on the more expensive side. When you consider the additional costs associated with purchasing and installing a lift into your van, this may be a prohibitive factor for some customers.

Chevrolet Express

A third type of full size van that is commonly used for conversion into wheelchair access is the Chevrolet Express. With less room than either of the other two vehicles listed here, it's a lesser choice in most cases. However, the Express is priced competitively and features a number of other redeeming qualities, such as a good warranty guarantee and excellent safety ratings.
