For some cars, finding the cheapest automotive repair parts can be as much of a challenge as installing them on the car. With a little practice and organization, however, the search process does become much easier. Some shoppers find it helpful to make a list of sources to check any time the need for a part becomes apparent.

For many at home mechanics, parts chain stores are at the top of their resource list. Chains can be a quick, convenient way to find quite a few basic components. Many stores are open seven days a week, and have the ability to order anything not readily available on their shelves. Some parts will also come with a warranty period protecting against any type of manufactures defect.

If you live in close proximity to a few different chains, it may be a good idea to make a phone call to each store to check prices. There are often surprising discrepancies in cost, and some stores may be able to have needed items in stock faster than others. In addition to their parts selection, chain stores are a great source for most automotive fluids. The high cost associated with shipping a sizable amount of liquid usually means most buyers will find a significant savings at their local brick-and-mortar store.

Of course, there is always the dealership parts department. A dealer is sometimes the only option for new car parts, and (aside from the Internet) one of few options for interior or exterior pieces. Dealerships do tend to be a little more expensive than chain stores, but some owners take pride in using only OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts on their vehicle.

The Internet is home to countless parts stores as well. Some of these can be a great bargain because they offer OEM parts at a deep discount. German Auto Parts (www.germanautoparts.com) is an excellent example of such a business, and they often stock quite a few tough to find items. Rock Auto (www.rockauto.com) is a more generic vendor, but can be another great source of obscure items for any make or model.

Salvage yards often offer unbeatable deals for some of the more common early model cars. Some caution should be used when buying electrical parts from any junkyard, but non-wear items, body panels and interior parts can usually be had for an incredible value. Additionally, local "U-pull-it" type yards can be a fun way to pass a pleasant Saturday afternoon.

The ability to find the lowest price on automotive repair parts is one of the major benefits of do-it-yourself auto repair. The willingness to shop around for parts can save a substantial amount of cash. When it comes to a particular parts type, some will find certain sources are consistently cheaper than others. This doesn't make any one vendor better than another, but it does prove how important the research process truly is.
