MetLife car insurance is a U.S. auto insurer based in New York City. According to the 2009 J.D. Power auto insurance ratings, the company ranked near the middle on overall customer satisfaction. In the 7 rating factors measured by J.D. Power, MetLife Auto & Home ranked on average 3 on a 5 point scale. This was across the board in the areas of overall customer satisfaction, first notice of loss (claims handling experience), service interaction, appraisal of damage, repair process, experience with rental or temporary vehicles and the claims settlement process.
User Customer Satisfaction Ratings
In the area of overall customer satisfaction, MetLife Auto & Home ranked above 21st Century and AIG (who both received ratings of 2). The customer satisfaction rating for MetLife matched Allstate, Nationwide, Travelers, Progressive, Safeco, Liberty Mutual and GEICO. This puts MetLife in company with its chief competitors, but behind leaders State Farm, Amica and GMAC.
User First Notice of Loss Ratings
Regarding the area of first notice of loss ratings, the area where a policyholder first interacts with the insurer to report a claim, MetLife again rated in the middle of the pack. Their rating of 3 were the same as their peer group of Travelers, Nationwide, Progressive and Liberty Mutual although GEICO’s rating moved up to 4 and GMAC and Amica both scored the top user rating of 5.
User Service Interaction Rating
MetLife maintained its moderate rating of 3 in the area of service interaction with the policyholder. The peer group stays on par with MetLife Auto & Home in this user rating category and GMAC and American Family Insurance lead with a perfect 5 rating. Service interaction is the way in which the insurer’s customer service representatives and claims adjusters/processors interact with the policyholder during the repair or claims process.
User Damage Appraisal Rating
MetLife Auto & Home scored another 3 in the area of appraising vehicle damage. The best company was again GMAC with a perfect 5 and Amica who received a rating of 4 out 5. GEICO, Travelers and Allstate moved up in this category, each scoring a 4 out 5, while Nationwide and Progressive remained with MetLife with a 3.
User Repair Process Rating
The user ratings for MetLife for dealing with the repair of a damaged car was also a 3. This rating is consistent with the ratings that MetLife received in the other customer satisfaction user factors. Policyholders of The Hartford ranked the company with 5 stars and Progressive auto policyholders gave their company a 2 star rating out of 5.
User Rental Car Rating
Users also rated their experience in dealing with the insurer when negotiating or receiving a rental car. Again for MetLife, the rating was a 3 out of 5. GEICO and Progressive scored the highest in this rating category with 5s apiece, while GMAC fell to the middle of the pack with a rating of 3 out 5.
User Claims Settlement Rating
In the final user rating factor, claims settlement, MetLife scored a 3 out of 5. This rating was within the peer group of Travelers, Nationwide, Progressive and Allstate and below the rating of GMAC who received a 4 out 5 and Amica who had the best user rating of 5.
