The BMW Z3 is a two door roadster that, for some, defines the top down driving experience, and some owners look for a little more from their car by changing their Z3 exhaust system.

The two most popular ways to modify a Z3 exhaust is an axle back and a cat back. An axle back exhaust consists of a muffler and a pipe that runs from the rear axle of the car to the muffler. A cat back exhaust, by contrast, comes with the muffler and a longer pipe that runs back to the catalytic converter of the car.

A cat back tends to cost more money, but will usually create more power. Whereas an axel back will cost less but have less benefit.

Each different exhaust system can produce much different sounds, so it is important for an owner to listen to sound clips and watch videos that show the differences between the systems so an owner can pick the exhaust that best fits his personal preferences.

Below is a collection of sounds that show the different setups some enthusiasts have gon with for their Z3 exhausts.
