You want to paint a carbon fiber hood or other body part. Painting carbon fiber isn’t like painting anything else since the carbon fiber tends to absorb paint at an amazing rate, allowing the imperfections in the weave to show through. If the carbon fiber body part you want to paint has a gelcoat or clearcoat on it, you’re going to need to hand sand the part until you have removed the coating. Then you’ll need to apply a minimum of three to five coats of primer. Professionals recommend three coats of primer, then either bake the part, or allow it to dry for two to three days. Then add two to three more coats. All of this needs to be done before applying the color coats.
