A good set of car subwoofer speakers is an important addition to any vehicle's speaker system. Subwoofers handle the very lowest frequencies, usually between 20 and 200 Hz. Replacing basic factory-brand subwoofers can greatly increase the sound quality of the stereo system and thus improve the listening experience. If you need help choosing car subwoofer speakers, these tips will help you make sure you're well informed before purchasing.

Tip 1: Know your Target Genre

The number of subwoofers you should have for your vehicle depends on two factors: available space and the type of music you want to listen to. If you mainly listen to genres where bass isn't a huge factor, such as classical or country, one subwoofer is enough. For rap or techno, though, you will probably want two. Note when deciding on the number of subwoofers that subwoofer speakers produce sound which is omni-directional, so purchasing two won't give you better stereo sound.

Tip 2: Check the Quality

The cheapest subwoofers available have paper cones. It's generally agreed that these provide relatively poor sound quality and will not be an upgrade to factory speakers. The best quality cones are made of carbon fiber, aluminum and polypropylene. Rubber is often regarded as the best, most durable material for surrounds. Some manufacturing brands known for consistent, superior quality are: Alpine, Blaupunkt, Boss, JVC, and Pioneer.

Tip 3: How Much Bass?

In general, speakers with larger subwoofer cones (8 to 12 inches) produce more powerful bass. If you want the windows to vibrate and heads to turn when you listen to music, bigger is often better, space allowing.

The Internet is a great place to read reviews on specific subwoofer speakers and to compare specifications and prices. By keeping these tips in mind when browsing, you should be able to find your ideal subwoofers.
